A High Elvish Working Based on the Work of J.R.R. Tolkien

Premise: By using known and effective magickal techniques and theory, it is possible to explore the Truth beyond J.R.R. Tolkien’s created Arda.
In August of 1993, several people from The Order of the Red Grail participated in this experimental magickal working from the High Elven point of view. I participated as Galadriel. The following is the magickal technology we used to invoke the powers of the Valor:

To duplicate our efforts, you need to create elvish Magickal Implements directly relating to Tolkien’s Middle Earth:
BANNER: On a deep blue ground, a rendering of the two trees of Valinor: TELPERION in silver and to the left LAURELIN to the right in glittering gold. A nice touch would be to write out the hymn to Varda in the Tengwar (Fëanorian Elvish letters) which may be written in gold with the vowel accents in silver.
FLASHING TABLETS: To be placed in each of the four directions, defining sacred space using Tengwar leters:
East: Romen (light purple letter on yellow ground)
South: Hyarmen (Green letter on Red ground);
West: Númen (Orange letter on blue ground);
North: Formen (Silver letter on Green Ground)

THE RED-GRAIL VALAR WORKING (August/1993)
A. No Form, breathing, OMs (to the accompaniment of an audio tape of the Solar Winds)
B. Meta-programming protocol: LRP, Cross of Elements, Open Centers (down & up), Caduceus
C. Elvish SRP:
East – Face East and focus. Vibrate: “Palanquen lom luineil aglar rom! (Far and wide, the echoes speak of the Blue light’s brilliance at the moment of its arising!)” Draw invoking pentagram of the element. Focus through center and vibrate “ROMEN (The Eastern Way!)”
South – Face South and focus. Vibrate: “Linlhach sul tar nar, urtur, tinsir (O pool of leaping flames, the High Wind of Fire, the mystery of Heat, the flowing river of sparks).” Draw invoking pentagram of the element. Focus through center and vibrate: “HYARMEN (The Southern Way!)”
North – Face North and focus. Vibrate: “Falas fuin esgal glingond, luiniel iluve iant kemen e menel. (As the gloomy shore hides the gleaming stone, the Blue light that is the whole, bridging heaven and earth.)” Draw invoking pentagram of the element. Focus through center and vibrate:”FORMEN (The Northern Way!)”
West – Face West and focus. Vibrate: “Fea nim Elentari andu” (May the Spirit of the White Queen of the Stars shine down upon us…) Draw invoking pentagram of the element. Focus through center and vibrate: “ANDUNE (The Gift of the West!)”
Comments: The Order in which this SRP is done creates an energetic zig-zag honoring the Lightening Flash of Illumination. (Note: The Enochian Elemental tablets also use this sequence.) It is important to end up facing the west for the veil rending.
D. Rending the Veil – Hymn to Varda (Elbereth)*: Elvish is a very poetic language which easily sounds strikingly melodious and surprizingly appropriate to the qualitites being expressed.

Each of the seven lines has an appropriate gesture:
AH ELBERETH GILTHONIEL
Supplication – arms spread, hip high with palms open towards heaven
SILIVREN PENNA MIRIEL
Arms rise above head – palms touch together
O MENEL AGLAR ELENATH!
Arms sweep down to sides, then forward as if scooping up starlight into a ball between the palms
NA – CHAERED PALANDIRIEL
Push energy ball into chest at the heart or throat center
O GALADHREMIN ENNORATH
Extend arms out again as if offering the energy from that center
FANUILOS, LE LINNATHON
Arms swing down and back, palms upward. Head titlted back to look up at sky.
NEF AEAR, SEE NEF AERON!
Hands touch, palms together over the heart, then open outward (chest level) to define a boundary
(All face west while doing the Hymn/gestures to bring the star light of the Valar into the room. After this, all turn to face each other in a circle.)
E. Calling the Lords of the Valar
At the end of each call, an elven greeting is made by the caller:
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN” (The stars shine on the meeting of our people.) and this response is made by the group:
“ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO” (A star shines on the hour of our meeting.)
The person invoking MANWË says:
“Manwë, The first of all Kings: lord of the realm of Arda and ruler of all that dwell therein.
“In Arda, his delight is in the winds and the clouds and in all regions of the air — from the heights to the depths.
“Súlimo he is surnamed, Lord of the Breath of Arda. All swift birds, strong of wing, he loves and they come and go at his bidding.
“With Manwë dwells Varda…
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
The person invoking VARDA says:
“Varda, Lady of the Stars. In light is her power and her joy.
“When Varda is beside Manwë, he sees further than all other eyes — through mist and darkness and beyond the depths of the sea. And when Manwë is with Varda, she hears more clearly than all other ears the sounds of the voices that cry from east to west.
“Of all the Great Ones who dwell in this world, the Elves hold Varda most in reverence and love.
“Elbereth they name her. And they call upon her name out of the shadows of Middle-earth, and uplift it in song at the rising of the stars.
“Out of the depths of Eä she came — to the aid of Manwë and they have been seldom parted.
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
The person invoking ULMO says:
“Ulmo, Lord of the waters deep; dwells alone in a distant heep.
“Roams freely, seldom seen by mortals; but the rivers Sirion and Gelion are your greatest portals;
“Present in sorrow, joy, and love; in the clouds you touch brother Manwë above.
“Patron of the Teleri, in Aman and still here; music of the sea speaks to those you hold dear;
“Ruler of the unconscious, the impulse that moves, spark that energizes
“Be present now in this ritual held tonight; with your companions striving for all that is right.
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
The person invoking AULË says:
“I call upon Aulë, the Maker of the Dwarves. I call you from the Great Hall where you wroght the Seven Fathers from under Middle Earth.
“I sing for your presence:
“The Dwarves of yore made mighty spells
“while Hammers fell like ringing bells.
“In places deep, where dark things sleep
“In hollow halls beneath the fells.”
(sing above three times)
“Take us to the forge, oh Mighty Smith!
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
The person invoking OROME says:
“We greet thee now, great Orome, King of the forest and opener of the Way. With Vana you have refreshened and served Valinor. In darkness you once sought your people, bringing them into the light. You taught them songs and the secret songs of bird and beast. At the sound of your horn, the trees did grow.
“As Tauron you rode forth upon the white steed, pursuing the Enemy to the ends of the Earth. Alone among the Valar you faced him without fear. And in the time of Great Darkness you helped bring forth the two great lights. When we were lost and forsaken, you alone remained among us, your secret songs a light for us all. Come now again to the aid of those who would be your people.
“Show us again the secret path to the High Place; teach us again the mysteries of the Wild Hunt; once more bring your light to us.
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
The person invoking the FEANTURI says:
“I call upon the Feanturi, the brethen, the twins who are the Masters of Spirits. They are most often called Mandos and Lorien. Yet rightly, these are but the titles of their Halls; their true names are NAMO and IRMO:
“NAMO, the elder dwells in Mandos, which is westward in Valinor. He is the keeper of the houses of the Dead and the summoner of the slain. He forgets nothing, and he knows all things that shall be, save only those that lie still in the freedom of Iluvator. He is Doomsman of the Valar, pronouncing his dooms and judgements only at the bidding of Manwë.
“VAIRE, the weaver is his spouse, who weaves all things that have ever been in Time into her storied webs, and the Hall of Mandos, that ever widen as the ages pass, are clothed with them.
“IRMO, the younger, is the master of visions and dreams. In Lorien are his gardens in the land of the Valar and they are the fairest of all the places in the world, filled with many spirits.
“ESTE the gentle, healer of hurts and weariness is his spouse. Grey is her raiment and rest is her gift. She walks not by day, but sleeps upon an island in the tree-shadowed lake of Lorellin.
“From the fountains of Irmo and Este all those who dwell in Valinor draw refreshment; and often the Valar come themselves to Lorien and there find repose and easing of the burdens of Arda.
“We call upon you, Great Lords of the Feanturi, NAMO and IRMO, as the last of Iluvatar’s children, lost in the vast darkness at the End of Time. We request your presence, so that the memory of Valinor may be rekindled in our hearts.
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
The person invoking TULKAS says:
“Hail mighty warrior, Tulkas, subduer of the evil one. Astaldo, the strong one whose counsel was for security. May we, like you, give no quarter to darkness. With Nessa, your strength is renewed as she dances in Valinor on lawns of never-fading green.
“O Tulkas, the greatest in strength and in deed, golden-haired one who is tireless and can outrun all things that go on feet, Attend us now, great champion.
“ELENI SILIR LUMESSE OMENTIEMMAN”
Group response: “ELEN SILA LUMENN’ OMENTIELVO”
F. Silent communion with the Valar. Blessing of the Valar on the lembas and cordial (mead)
G. CLOSING. Repeat hymn to Elbereth.Give license to depart.

*Hymn to Elbereth is the seven-line salutation to Varda that Frodo hears as he is leaving the Great Hall of Rivendale. It is the Hymn to Varda that the last exiles of the High Elves use among themselves, and as such is the greatest and most potent expression of that longing for Valinor that is the deepest emotion of the Noldorian exiles. To Vincent’s knowledge (and he has checked) Tolkien never translated this version of the Hymn. In the earlier versions of the “Many Meetings” chapter, Tolkien uses a different poem:
“Elbereth Gilthoniel sir pennar oriel
dir avos-eithen miriel
bel daurion sel aurinon
pennaros evrin eriol”
This version, also untranslated, is a different poem. There are other versions of the hymn. Sam and Frodo tried their hand at a Common Speech version (from the songs that Gildar and the Wandering Elves were singing in the Woody End – FR 88-89) And there are several different versions of this poem, but none anywhere close to the translation of the Rivendale Hymn.
If we look closely at the Rivendale Hymn, we see that it has a rhythm scheme:
A – A – B – A – B – C – C which helps in the pronunciation and in memorization.
HYMN TO ELBERETH (with notes on pronunciation and Vincent’s translation):
AH ELBERETH GILTHONIEL
Ah El-ba-reth Gil-thon-ee-el
Oh Queen of the Stars, the brilliant Starlight

SILIVREN PENNA MIRIEL
See-live-ren Pen-nah Mee-ree-el
(is a) high shining being — a radiant star shone

O MENEL AGLAR ELENATH!
Oh Mee-nel Ah-glar El-en-aht
of heavenly glory — crystallized starlight!

NA – CHAERED PALANDIRIEL
Na – Kye-red Pa-lan-dir-ee-el
(Nah-chaered) far and wide the starlight shines

O GALADHREMIN ENNORATH
Oh Ga-lath-rim-in Een-no-raht
On the tree woven world of this middle land

FANUILOS, LE LINNATHON
Fan-oo-eel-os Le Lin-na-thon
(Fanuilos), let the holy beings sing

NEF AEAR, SEE NEF AERON!
Nef I-ar, See nef I-ar-on
Without my holiness, no one is holy!

Last performed in Haluzice, Czech Republic, May 2011.
